DBT Skills Training for Emotional Sensitivity
Do you or your loved one experience intense and frequent heightened emotions?
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) was developed to treat adults with Borderline Personality Disorder.
A key component of DBT is skills training in which therapists teach mindfulness skills, distress tolerance skills, emotion regulation skills, and interpersonal effectiveness skills; therapists then guide clients and their families in generalizing these skills to all aspect of their lives. Skills training helps to:
Increase awareness to internal responses (thoughts, feelings, and urges)
Balance validation of emotional responses with strategies to change behavioral patterns
Improve relationships, increase confidence, and build a life worth living
You’re ready to change how you understand and express emotion.
How therapy works
You can change your life, meet your goals, AND find acceptance for your emotional sensitivity.
Many individuals who benefit from DBT skills training have lived with a sense that they experience life more intensely and emotionally than others. They often have received messages from their environment that their emotions are “too much,” “don’t make sense,” or are overly dramatic. In therapy, you can grow to see your sensitivity as a strength or super-power, as you also learn to regulate and care for your emotions more effectively.
DBT was initially developed for adults and is now utilized for children, adolescents, and adults with diagnostic presentations including mood disorders, anxiety disorders, personality disorders, neurodivergence, and trauma/PTSD.
I was intensively trained in DBT in 2014 through Behavioral Tech. I practiced full model DBT for ten years with adolescents and their families, as well as children aged 6-12 and their families. Over the past eight years, I have also engaged in individual work with adults that includes DBT skills training and generalization. At this time, I continue to provide DBT skills training and DBT focused therapy within individual and family work.
DBT can be incredibly effective and helpful for emotionally sensitive individuals. It can also be very helpful for parents, partners, and loved ones of individuals who are highly emotionally sensitive.
You can learn skills to change your relationships and build your life worth living.
DBT can help you…
Find middle ground rather than falling to extreme thoughts and emotions
Understand and accept your emotional responses and/or your loved one’s emotional responses
Improve your relationships
Decrease suffering and increase joy in your day to day life
Live more fully and love the emotional landscape within
